Despite his age, Merkava has immense power. There are many theories about how he became so powerful. He has never confirmed nor denied any of them. The most commonly held belief is that he is the son of a deity or powerful extra-planar creature, as nobody, not even his closest friends, can remember ever hearing about his parents. As a Fighter, Merkava is very skilled in melee combat. He has also received training as a mage and a cleric, so he is able to cast powerful Divine and Arcane spells.

Merkava is the founder of New Trondheim, the second largest city in Erthshar. (The largest is the Bluefur Gnoll Stronghold.) New Trondheim was supposed to be a small safe haven for anyone who wanted to escape the violence and suffering that are far too commonplace in Erthshar. The village attracted many more people than anyone expected. Within a matter of months, it grew into the bustling city that it is today, boasting a diverse population of over 15,000.
